Hi,

May be this has been asked before, but I could not find it. Are COM Addins still supported in the newest Outlook Client that is found in the Beta-Channel (reported version 1.2022.615.100)? When debugging from Visual Studio the Debugger is instantly detached and exiting (without error) and within Outlook I cannot find any place to work with COM-Addins or Addins at all. Overall it looks just like OWA Online in an application shell.
So my guess is, they'll finally switch over to a web based app here and no longer support the "old" addins. Is this assumption correct?

Regards,
Alex

Hello Alex,

As far as I know such a web-based client is only started in you turn on the 'Try the New Outlook' button in the UI. That client cannot support COM add-ins; only the Windows Desktop client supports them.

Hi Andrei,

This is actually the new "Windows Desktop Client" for M365 users. Just a thin application browser shell around their OWA web application. I guess for M365 users that will be the future and Microsoft will roll out this version to everyone over time. So maybe the COM-Addin journey will be over then.

Alex

I sincerely doubt it. Programmatic efforts put in COM add-ins make this nearly impossible. Consider bigger corporations meeting this restriction.

I hope you're correct. We have some bigger customers, using M365 and rolling out this client to their employees ...

Seems that COM Addins are really running out of Support at Microsoft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIydcCxJFBo Web-Addins are not available yet, but will be available soon.

At what moment do they say this?

Do they refer to One Outlook or to Outlook?

Actually, I've found it: they show a text saying this at 2:45. And yes, they do not refer to Outlook. This is about One Outlook.

And from 2:02 the different Outlook Versions are mentioned and she says at around 2:13 that they want to move to One Outlook from there. So as I understand that, that includes all versions of Outlook. But maybe you're right, and they'll keep the current outlook at least for On Premise Exchange users.
