I created a simple COM Add In Module for Word and Excel.

When deploying onto a machine with Word 2000 on it, word is very slow to load (not just the first time) taking about 30 secs or more. If I disable the plugin Word loads instantly again.

Any ideas?

Hi Mick.

How much RAM do you have on your PC?

Mick,
This is a common problem in some situations. When an add-in is loaded, the Office app checks for cert revocation. Depending on the speed of the PC/Server, your internet connection etc, this can take a few seconds. The only time I have seen a 30 sec type lag is when the request is timing out, typically due to loss of connectivity or a proxy that is blocking the request.

To verify, open IE, goto Tools - Internet Options - Advanced Tab.
Scroll to bottom to security group and uncheck 'Check for publishers certificate revocation'. Save, close IE, then launch your Office App.
This takes the HTTP query to the MS servers out of the equation.

Unfortunately, this is a system wide setting. You cannot turn off this check for individual add-ins.

Does this apply to Outlook addins as well?

AFAIK, all Office apps do this verifcation for add-ins, signed or unsigned. Easy enought to verify, by blocking/dropping the connection / check/uncheck the option in IE.
