XLL addin registry key automatically deleting

We have an addin that is used by a lot of clients, it has both a COM and an XLL addin component.

In one particular instance, the client has run the installer but the XLL addin component is not registering. On inspection of the registry, the normal 'OPEN' key in Excel/Options is not there. I manually created the 'OPEN' key pointing to the relevant adxloader.dll, however when the user opens/closes Excel, the key is removed.

Do you have any ideas as to what might be happening that the 'OPEN' key is not being created on install, and being automatically deleted?

Many thanks,

Hello Sean,

Does the issue occur if all other Excel add-ins and COM add-ins are turned off? Is the issue reproducible on a new empty XLL add-in (you can uncomment the test method supplied)?

The client had no other Excel addins (unusual I know!)

Also, we can't interrupt them frequently, so it might be difficult to create an installer for them just to install an empty test XLL addin... is there any other way of ascertaining what might be going on?

I don't know if such a way exists; there's still little information.

Is that key gets deleted as soon as you starts Excel? Or, it gets deleted when Excel closes?

Is this a network profile?

Hi Andrei,

it is deleted as soon as Excel is started. The computer is not on a network.

In the Task Manager window, is Excel started under that user's name?

Is the add-in listed in the File | Options | Add-ins dialog? Under what header?

Hi Andrei, Excel is started under that users name. The add-in does not appear at all in the add-ins dialog, and there is no 'OPEN' key in the registry under Excel/Options.

Sean,

Is there a value pointing to your add-in in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\{version}.0\Excel\Add-in Manager key?

Is this the Excel Add-ins dialog? I was asking about the Add-ins tab on the File | Options dialog.
