IE11 Enhanced Protected Mode
Registry access

I've been testing my add-on with various flavours of Windows with and without Enhanced Protected Mode switched on in IE10 and IE11.

All was fine until I fired up Windows 8.1 with IE11 and started getting errors on READING the AppDataLow registry - not just on writing!

Does anyone know if EPM under IE11 in Win8.1 blocks read access to AppDataLow registry entries?

(I've tested Windows 7 with IE11 and EPM switched on and that works ok and does not block read access to that registry.)

Hi James,

In Windows 8, EPM blocks everything. You need to use a broker app (an .exe run in Medium Integrity Level) to access the system registry and local files.

Sergey,

Thanks for confirming that.

Windows 8.0 would still be using IE10 so is not affected (read access still available), this only affects Windows 8.1 which has IE11.

I have noticed reports that MS have back tracked on having EPM turned on by default in IE11 - default is now off - due to numerous reports of incompatibilities.

Rather than create a broker app - which I am sure isn't trivial - I am happy to keep my add-on marked as EPM compatible and test for EPM being turned on together with the OS version and advise user accordingly to switch off EPM if they want to use the add-on. (see other posts: http://www.add-in-express.com/forum/read.php?FID=10&TID=11927 ;http://www.add-in-express.com/forum/read.php?FID=10&TID=11935)

Or do you have info on creating a broker app?

Many thanks.

Hi James,

You can read about the broker app here (see 'Starting Processes from Protected Mode'):
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb250462(v=vs.85).aspx
I am going to add such a broker app to the next major version of Add-in Express for IE.

Hi Sergey,

I'm very interested in the broker app. Could you give me an estimate of when we can expect the next major version?

Thanks
