Server installation of Add-ins

I have yet another question. Since add-ins for Microsoft Office are likely to be used in corporate networks I'd like to know if they can be installed on a server or they have to be installed on client machines directly for them to work.

If the latter is the case, is it possible to install them from the server or to automate the process somehow? I am fairly new in this business of network operation.

Thank you very much.

Hi Manuel,

What kind of server do you mean? Terminal Server?

Dmitry,

I don't know much about servers. So I can't answer you. I'll try to explain myself better.

I see two different scenarios:

On a single system, the user obtains a program called setup, maybe downloaded from the Internet. The user installs the add-in by executing the program, which copies the needed files and registers the add-in for PowerPoint to recognize it. The add-in keeps all the needed data it uses on the user's machine at a known place (the folder the add-in is installed, the registry, ...)

If the user likes the add-in and buys it, gets a serial number which he enters in a dialog provided by the add-in.

So far so good, this is how my add-in works.

But on a large system with many users the system administrator is not going to be willing to copy the setup.exe program to all the individual computers, install them and then entering many times the serial number. Most probably he is used to automated procedures for installing software on many machines and expects to proceed in this way.

What I would like to know is how do other users of Add-In Express handle this situation.

Thank you very much,

- Manuel Onate

Hi Manuel,

We did not face such a task because we don't specialize in end-user solutions. So, let's see what other Add-in Express customers will say.
